While the US economy has struggled mightily over the past few years, the private for-profit school sector has flourished. Why? Well, while some folks claim otherwise, most of us believe that our business is countercyclical. As the economy goes bad and unemployment rises, enrollments at our schools increase; and, as long as our graduates can still find jobs, life is good. This has been true historically and certainly has been true during the latest economic downturn. But the recession never lasts and now we're hearing all sorts of predictions related to imminent economic recovery and the timing of the next inflationary cycle. And so it goes -
No matter what your views happen to be concerning the economy and how it affects our sector, now is a good time to think about what you can do to insulate your school(s) from the effects of a recovering economy and even take advantage of inflation. One of the best vehicles to accomplish this is a solid high school recruiting program. Among the many benefits of high school recruiting is the fact that it is much less countercyclical than our other methods of marketing and admissions. It is the most steady and predictable lead and start source available - period. The problem is that creating a successful high school program takes a while. If you're starting from scratch, you need to plan on at least a couple of years before the program begins to produce the results you expect. In addition, you need to commit to a significant investment of both human and financial resources. But what a great investment! And if you start now, you'll be right where you want to be when the economy changes - again.
If you already have an existing high school recruitment program, the question to ask yourself is whether or not it is operating at peak efficiency. Is it providing you with the results (leads and starts) that you expect? If not, now is the time to examine your existing program and determine what changes you can make to get it to where you want it to be. Remember that modifications made during this recruiting season will reap benefits not only for next year's recruiting season, but also for the spring of 2010.
